Film Bad, Digital Good
While out shooting a portrait this weekend, I decided to let my Holga tag along. I have been shooting a lot with it lately and wanted to use it for a couple of frames. I got all of my lights set up and took a couple of practice shots of my assistent, Natalie. My subject showed up, I snapped a couple of quick frames and told him that I wanted to take a couple of practice frames with my film camera. He sounded kind of surprised when i told him that I hadn't been shooting with film for the first 40 frames. Most people don't realize that point and shoot cameras are not the only digital cameras. Well, I took a couple pictures with the Holga and set it down. I thanked my subject for coming and when I turned around, I noticed that the back of my Holga had opened up, exposing the film. Not good! I quickly clipped the back shut again, all the while knowing that my film was ruined. I explained to Natalie that even the smallest amount of light reaching the negative will ruin it. It was a little harder to explain how Holga's usually let a little night leak through, so I didn't even bother. This experience helped me to realize just how lucky I am to have grown up a digital baby. Yes, I originally learned how to shoot on film, but events like this make me glad that I only have to mess with film every so often. I'll try to post the Holga pictures when I develop them.
